Understanding HD
High Definition is the new standard in image quality. “HD” as it is known is the resolution that all future tv broadcasts and video content will be delivered in. HD can be 720p/1080i or 1080p. The “i” stands for interlaced, meaning the image is produced with two passes, odd then even. The “p” stands for progressive, achieving the image in one pass. What’s the difference? Progressive makes for a smoother, cleaner image, very good for motion and sports viewing.

Television HD broadcasts are transmitted at 720p/1080i. Sony's Blu-Ray DVD delivers the highest, 1080p resolution. Older DVDs will upconvert but only to 702p/1080i.

HD content is available from your local cable companies, satellite TV, over-the-air, and from some of the telecomm companies.
